Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and Root Planing (SRP)

Are you dealing with the degenerative problem of gingivitis? If so we urge you to not let it go untreated. In the earlier stages gingivitis can be managed by scaling the teeth. This means that the dental professional will remove the plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth. If you have neglected bleeding gums for quite some time your gingivitis may have advanced to the point where you will need root planing along with the tooth scaling.

Root planing involves the process required to smooth the root surfaces in order to remove any of the tooth structures that have become infected. Infection happens because bacteria are attracted to the areas in your teeth and gums that have excess build up of plaque and tartar.

This is not a surgical procedure so it will not require any general anesthesia. If you experience any discomfort during the procedure the areas can be numbed for the scaling and root planing. If you have problems throughout your mouth the dentist will break down your scaling and root planing treatments in such a way that only a small section of your mouth is treated at a time. This helps with the healing process and shortens the amount of time you will be in the dentist chair for each visit.
